1-on-1 Math Tutoring for K-5th Grade Students
Depending upon your child’s individual needs, we focus on:
Learning gaps
We identify skills and concepts from previous grade levels which students have not learned to mastery. Then, we teach, practice and review those skills and concepts until students are able to independently and confidently use them.
Number sense and estimation
We help students to more fluently and comfortably compose and decompose numbers in different ways (Ex. 25 = 20 + 5, 25 = 15 + 10, etc). Students also learn how and when to use estimation to help make math easier.
Common Core strategies
Across all topics and concepts, we help students identify the Common Core strategies that make the most sense to them. We practice solving problems using these strategies, so students can be successful both inside and outside of the classroom.
Procedural fluency
We help students understand why certain procedures are used to solve a problem, so they can more easily recall the steps in that specific procedure. We teach strategies for organized written work. This will lead to correct answers and classroom math success.
Math fact fluency
We find ways to help each student master their math facts. When parents are interested, we create a motivating at-home practice plan to encourage students to practice their math facts daily.
Real-life word problems
Helping students to understand what word problems are asking and teaching them to correctly apply procedures to solve those problems are very important skills. We start with word problems at each student’s level and gradually increase the level of difficulty to grade-level and beyond.
Checking math work
We help students to find errors in their work and to identify when their answer does not make sense.
Homework help
We can incorporate homework completion into tutoring sessions with the goal of giving students the skills to confidently, correctly and independently complete future homework assignments.
Enrichment opportunities
We can help students extend their understanding of all math concepts in fun and engaging ways.
